Size images for the space they fill, serve modern formats and load only what is on screen. Most slow pages are slow because of pictures.
- Prioritise the largest image above the fold
- Defer scripts that are not needed for first paint
- Self-host fonts and limit weights
Stay stable
Reserve space for images and embeds so the page does not jump while it loads. Layout shift is the quickest way to lose a reader's trust.
